The Studio - Couples Support for People with Dementia

Overview

Wednesday 11-12.30 and 1.30-3pm

Caroline and Rosemary are volunteers at The Studio on Wednesdays running groups for carers and people living with Dementia

Couples attend together with the aim that the carers sit separately and enjoy a time to chat and share information over a cup of coffee or tea whilst the people with dementia enjoy activities led by Rosemary and Caroline. Carers say that they find the time away from their partners really beneficial as it enables them to share experiences and have a chat in the full knowledge that their partners are being entertained and well cared for.

The morning group is for people with dementia who have limited conversational abilities and focuses on simple, chair-based exercises, singing and reciting well-known rhymes.

The afternoon group is for people with Dementia who have more cognitive ability and is themed, focussing on word-finding exercises, quizzes and simple games. Themes have included: going out for the day; planning a garden; sports and hobbies: films and TV.

The main objective is to have fun whilst following evidence-based cognitive stimulation therapy principles.

The purpose of The Studio is to enrich the lives of people with dementia and similar cognitive problems. We do this by providing the time, space and support for individuals with a dementia diagnosis to express themselves, enjoy new experiences, practise skills – and have fun. The Studio’s model has been developed using community consultation and is based on evidence from research. Carers may come along, if they wish, or take time out from caring, confident that the person with dementia is enjoying excellent care in a stimulating environment. We offer a varied programme of individual and group activities led by professional facilitators. See our website for the latest events and programme schedule.
