Play Therapy at Primary Wellbeing CIC
What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is a recognised therapeutic approach that helps children express themselves, explore their feelings, and make sense of difficult life experiences — all through play. For children who may not yet have the words to talk about how they feel, play becomes their natural language. Through creative activities such as sand, art, storytelling, and role play, children are supported by a qualified therapist to process emotions, build resilience, and develop healthier ways of coping.
Where We Deliver Play Therapy
We offer Play Therapy in a range of settings to make it accessible and flexible for families. This includes:
- Local primary and secondary schools
- Our welcoming therapeutic base in Nottinghamshire
- Community venues such as Family Hubs
We work closely with each family or school to find the most appropriate setting for the child’s needs.

Local Offer
Alignment with the Nottinghamshire ATTEND Framework
Play Therapy directly supports the principles of the Nottinghamshire ATTEND Framework (Access, Trust, Tools, Environment, Nurture, Direction), which guides how children with SEMH needs are supported across the county. Here’s how:
- Access: We offer flexible delivery across schools, our woodland therapy base, and community venues to ensure support is accessible to all children, including those who are harder to reach.
- Trust: Therapeutic relationships are built over time through consistent, attuned, and child-centred practice — forming the foundation for emotional healing and progress.
- Tools: Children are supported to develop emotional literacy, self-regulation skills, and healthy coping strategies through play-based techniques tailored to their individual needs.
- Environment: Our nurturing settings, including our woodland base, provide calm, sensory-aware spaces that support children to feel safe and secure.
- Nurture: Sessions are delivered with empathy, patience, and respect for each child’s unique experiences and needs, helping them to build confidence and self-worth.
- Direction: We work collaboratively with families, schools, and professionals to monitor progress and shape ongoing support in a meaningful, joined-up way.
How Play Therapy Fits Within the Nottinghamshire SEND Local Offer
Play Therapy forms part of the graduated approach to meeting the needs of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). It is an early intervention that sits within the SEND Local Offer as a specialist support service promoting emotional regulation, communication development, and positive mental health. At Primary Wellbeing CIC, our trained therapists work alongside families, schools, and other professionals to provide targeted, child-led support for those who may be struggling due to social, emotional, or mental health (SEMH) needs.
Play Therapy can be particularly beneficial for children with:
- Autism spectrum conditions
- Speech, language, and communication needs
- Attachment difficulties or early trauma
- Anxiety or sensory processing differences
Our provision complements Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), SEND Support Plans, and school-based strategies by helping children engage more successfully with learning and social relationships.
