Newstead Abbey Historic House and Gardens

Overview

Newstead Abbey was originally a monastery founded by Henry II between 1164 and 1174 in memory of his grandfather.
During the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century, King Henry VIII sold the Abbey for £810 to Sir John Byron of Colwick. Surviving earthquakes and a Civil war, the original façade of the old church priory, the West Front and the medieval cloisters still stand.
Most famous as the home of poet Lord Byron, visitors today can see his private apartments as well as letters, objects and the furniture that belonged to him.
Explore the medieval cloisters, the Victorian sitting rooms and the private apartments of the poet Byron. Browse in the Gothic Revival Library and marvel at the carved angels and the splendid Minstrels' Gallery in the Great Hall. Admire the romantic priory church West Front with its sculpture of the Virgin and Child.
Over 300 acres of parkland with paths that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls, await visitors to the gardens. The formal gardens are the perfect place to escape with something to offer in all seasons; from the bright colours of the rhododendrons in late spring to the Japanese maples in autumn. Newstead has a garden for all tastes, formal Walled Gardens, the Green Fern Garden and the Rockery with its beautiful alpine flowers.
