Overview
Are you ready to make a real difference in a child or young person's life?
A Befriender is a trusted adult who volunteers to offer support, encouragement, and a listening ear to children and young people in care. You'll be someone they can talk to about anything—completely independent from social services and other agencies.
Your role? Just listen. You'll be a consistent, positive presence—a role model who brings hope, fun, and stability. Whether it's chatting over a hot chocolate, trying something new together, or simply being there, your time matters.
We ask for a long-term commitment—usually at least two years—because consistency builds trust.
How Does It Work?
This service is for children and young people in care aged 5 to 17.
When you volunteer, we'll carefully match you with a young person. This might take a little time—we want to make sure it's the right fit and that the young person feels comfortable and connected with you.
Once matched, you'll meet once a month, at a time and place that suits you both. The young person can opt out at any time if they decide they no longer want a befriender.
Confidentiality is key. You'll keep what they share private, unless:
They ask you to share something.
You believe they or someone else is in danger.
You're concerned a crime has happened or may happen.
