Big Band Bash Promises to Banish January Blues!

Dig out your vintage outfit and dust down your dancing shoes to join Radford Care Group for an afternoon of music, dancing and fun at Oakleigh Lodge Social Club, Highbury Vale on Sunday 26 January 2020 in support of their ‘Buy a Brick’ Campaign.

Radford Care Group (registered charity 1073938) currently supports 95 older people a week to feel part of their community, but demand is predicted to rise to 350 people per week. They have outgrown the ‘temporary’ flat back building that they have inhabited since 1979, so in order to help more people, in 2016 they embarked on an ambitious campaign to fund a new building that will help their dedicated staff and volunteers to expand the services they provide to many more older citizens, when it is completed in the Spring of 2020. To date £690,000 of the £800,000 target has been raised, but to stay on track more support is needed from the local community to raise the remaining £110,000.

Radford Care Group supported Brian Fisher and his family from 2015 - 2017 after Brian was diagnosed with Dementia and when Brian sadly passed away in October 2018 his family wanted to do something in his memory to thank Radford Care Group and support their Buy a Brick Campaign. Brian always had a joke and a smile and would arrive laden with his Rock ‘n’ Roll CD collection to entertain everybody! January 2020 would have been Brian’s 81st birthday, so his family would like to honour his memory and celebrate the music he loved, by hosting a vintage 1940’s & 1950’s “Big Band Bash”.

Starting at 12.30pm, the vintage-themed ‘bash’ will be introduced by 1940’s vocalist Jayne Darling, with the afternoon’s entertainment including a quiz, a raffle and a classic afternoon tea. Nottingham Concert Band takes to the stage at 2.00pm and MD Robert Parker promises to lead the 50-strong band through a playlist ranging from Count Basie and Glenn Miller to Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé and timeless toe-tappers from the rock & roll era.

Tickets are now on sale now (£10, non-refundable) and advance booking is essential. Raffle tickets can also be bought in advance (£1 each/£5 for a book). Pop into Radford Care Group, ring 0115 978 6133 or email online ticket purchases and general donations can also be made at

The venue is wheelchair accessible. it has easy access to public transport and ample off-road parking. A licensed bar will be open all afternoon and tea and coffee will be available. 1940’s & 1950’s vintage dress is optional.
