Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Council UPDATE BULLETIN – For all health and social care providers – Wednesday 21st July 2021

Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Council UPDATE BULLETIN – For all health and social care providers – Wednesday 21st July 2021

Dear Providers, the information below contains current and up to date information from our strategic partners for you and your staff:

New and updated guidance and support, including information on funding:

Department of Health & Social Care - Visiting arrangements in care homes

Please find the letter attached for your information.

MHRA - Personal protective equipment and heat: risk of heat stress

On 09 June we sent out information and actions for providers regarding the wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) in warm/hot environments and the increased risk of heat stress.  We are re-sending this information to providers as a reminder given the current hot weather.

Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in warm/hot environments increases the risk of heat stress. This occurs when the body is unable to cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature. Heat stress can cause heat exhaustion and lead to heat stroke if the person is unable to cool down.

Measures to control the temperature of clinical environments and enable staff to make behavioural adaptations to stay cool and well hydrated should be made. Staff may require more frequent breaks and the frequency of PPE changes may increase, with a resulting increase in demand.  CAS-ViewAlert (mhra.gov.uk)

PPE Update Message for all providers

From 19th July, England has moved to Step 4 of the roadmap, and most coronavirus (COVID-19) legal restrictions have been lifted. However, due to the nature of the settings and vulnerability of the population, use of PPE and infection prevention and control (IPC) measures should continue to be practised in health and social care settings including all care workers delivering care in people’s homes (domiciliary care). This applies even if staff or service users have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Please continue to wear PPE as per the following guidance:

COVID-19: how to work safely in domiciliary care in England - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

COVID-19: how to work safely in care homes - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

It is also important to continue:

  • Getting testing if you have any potential COVID-19 symptoms
  • Continuing any current Lateral Flow testing arrangements you have in place

To get tested, please visit Get tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

If you have any further questions, please contact ppe@nottscc.gov.uk or refer to:

Coronavirus: how to stay safe and help prevent the spread - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Publication of deaths in care homes

The CQC are intending to publish the numbers of deaths in care homes by care home this week.

To the best of our understanding it’s an interactive map rather than a list of care homes that will be published.

Please be prepared for potential media interest when the figures are released. If you need support, please contact us on qmm@nottscc.gov.uk

Vaccination as a condition of deployment - Care England webinar

Care England, in collaboration with Barchester Healthcare, are hosting a webinar to provide support for adult social care providers following the Government’s decision to make vaccination a condition of deployment in care homes.

They will be joined by Professor Nicola Stonehouse, School of Molecular Virology at Leeds University, Dr Pete Calveley, Chief Executive of Barchester Healthcare, Genevieve Glover, Group HR Director at Barchester Healthcare, a representative from RadcliffesLeBrasseur LLP and they hope to be joined by a representative from the Department of Health and Social Care.

Chaired by Professor Martin Green OBE, Chief Executive of Care England, the webinar will provide an opportunity for adult social care providers to hear from Barchester Healthcare who introduced this policy into their own organisation for new starters in January and for all of their existing staff in April, following extensive engagement, communication and support. Nicola and the Barchester team will explain the approach they have taken to educate and inform Barchester’s staff about the Covid-19 vaccination programme and their policy.

The webinar will be hosted via Zoom on 23 July between 12:30 - 14:00.

If you wish to attend, please contact events@careengland.org.uk with your expression of interest and you will be sent a diary invitation with the meeting link.

Places are limited so book soon.

Video link - pregnancy and the vaccine

Many of you may be aware that there is a lot of hesitancy around getting vaccinated while pregnant or trying for a baby. Clinical colleagues from the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Local Maternity and Neonatal System recently hosted their second live Q&A to share the latest information and data around covid and the vaccine in pregnancy. You can watch a recording of the event here.
