Message regarding Covid-19 vaccination programme

As you will know, the Covid-19 vaccination roll out is a fast moving and changing situation and we are aiming to keep you informed by providing weekly updates.

The Covid-19 vaccination programme is now expected to start in care homes in early January. This is because the first vaccine likely to be available cannot be transported to care homes because of how it needs to be stored.  However we are expecting an alternative vaccine to be available from January onwards.

We want to assure you that care home residents and all care staff remain a priority for vaccination. As soon as a vaccine is available and a date has been confirmed, our goal is to vaccinate residents and as many staff as possible. If we are able to vaccinate staff earlier we will do so and details on how we may be able to do that are currently being finalised. As soon as we have a local plan and confirmation of vaccines for health and care staff we will let you know. We want to assure you that our plans are to give frontline health care staff equal access to the vaccinations, whichever setting they work in.

For now, the most important thing we can collectively do to prepare for this programme is to ensure as many staff and residents are vaccinated against the Flu as possible and that your returns on the NHS tracker submission is used to record the numbers of people vaccinated. Having the Flu vaccination now will not delay any opportunities to have the Covid vaccination when it rolls out.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Melanie Brooks                    Corporate Director for Adult Social Care and Health, Nottinghamshire County Council
