At St. Michael's Primary School we believe that including children in all areas of school life is vital. We support children with a range of different needs and have a number of interventions across school to support every child to reach their potential.

We have an extremely experienced and caring team of teaching assistants who work alongside our children and their families, we are fully aware that to enable your child to feel safe, happy and make progress the partnership with parents is key. We welcome dialogue with parents and are here to support you as a family whilst your child is with us at St Michael's and as they transition to the next school.

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

We cater for a range of additional needs within our school, we welcome visitors to come and see what we do and how we can support your child during their time with us.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

It is the responsibility of the class teacher to initially identify if they feel a child needs extra support during their time with us. Parents are also welcome to come in and talk to staff if they have concerns, either to see the class teacher or to come to the half termly drop in sessions with the SENDco. We value parents points of view highly and always invite honest and open discussion, so that your child has a really positive experience of school.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

The SENDco and SLT monitor the progress of all pupils throughout the year, the SENDco will regularly observe and visit the children with additional needs to see how well they are progressing. A yearly report is submitted to the head teacher and school governors evaluating the SEN support for that year and making suggestions for future actions. Questionnaires are also sent out each year to parents and staff within school to gain feedback about he provision.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

Children with additional needs usually have termly review meetings with class teacher, any TA involved and also the SENDco to discuss your child provision and their progress, this is an open forum to share successes and discuss any concerns or adjustments that might need to be made.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

At St Michael's, we aim to include children as fully as we can in the life of our school, at times, this may involve making adjustments to the teaching, adapting learning materials, using other means of communication. The children may, at times, need additional support through short or long term interventions. We  believe that all children are different and therefore aim to do our best to meet the individual needs of the children.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

Depending on the needs of the children class teachers and teaching assistants make adaptations to the learning to meet the needs of the child, such as the use of braille, ICT, an alteration to the activity itself or different expectations for the outcome of the activity.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

Through termly review meetings or informal meetings with class teacher and senco if appropriate.

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

We always evaluate the best way in which to include all children in our visits, sometimes this means adding in an alternative activity or adapting this activity so that your child can take part. We aim to include all the children as best we can in all that we do.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

As a church school we have daily acts of worship and reflection, this feeds very much into each persons well being within our school. we also offer a range of support for more specific well being needs/

See attached doc for our well being support at St Michael's primary school.
