Morven Park Primary and Nursery School

Morven Park Primary School

Morven Park Primary School is a medium to large size primary school in Kirkby-in-Ashfield. We are a primary school with nursery provision, so educate pupils 3-11 years.

We believe that every child is entitled to a high quality education in a caring environment. All children are special and should be made to feel so; they should be valued, respected and nurtured. As citizens of the future, they must be made aware of the vital contribution they can make to society. We want our children to reach their potential and become ‘well rounded’ and ‘well adjusted’ adults. Therefore, we endeavour to make our school a learning community, a place where children and adults eagerly work and learn together in a secure, happy, exciting and challenging environment.

Schools Extended Local Offer Response

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

Morven Park Primary School is an inclusive school. We welcome pupils and their families with Special Educational Needs and / or disabilities. We have a range of facilities and specific equipment in school and our staff are highly trained to support many Special Educational Needs and disabilities.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

At Morven Park, we build a strong partnership with children and their families. We believe that parents know their child best. The voice of parents and their children will always be heard, and we will support families with any concerns that they have about their child. If school staff have a concern about a child, we aim to inform parents as soon as this concern is apparent. With the support of parents, we work in partnership to plan any relevant specialist educational provision for their child.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

All specialist educational provision is mapped rigorously, with starting points and end points. This information is then shared with each child’s parents. The school SENCO, Mrs Olliffe, also monitors the progress of pupils with SEN to ensure that they are making good (or better) progress.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

Parents of children with SEN are invited to at least three review meetings per year. At these meetings, each child’s targets are reviewed and their next steps in learning are identified. A written report of your child’s progress is created at the end of each school year. Parents are encouraged to be an active part of their child’s learning. Our Smile group runs regularly, which aims to support parents / carers who have children with SEN.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

Morven Park is an inclusive school. We teach all children, regardless of need or disability. Quality first teaching is an entitlement of all pupils. Work is tailored to suit the needs of all children. Where appropriate, specialist interventions can be put in place to focus on a child’s specific area of need.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

Children in Foundation Stage follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Children in Key Stages 1 and 2 follow the National Curriculum. Work is differentiated to suit the learning needs of all pupils. Some children, with more complex special educational needs, will have a personalised curriculum.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

All children receive quality first teaching from their teacher. Additional support for children can be allocated in a number of ways:

  • Through Teaching Assistant support within class
  • Through a targeted intervention program
  • Through support provided by an external agency, such as speech and language therapy
  • Through 1:1 support, where appropriate All decisions about additional support are made in consultation with the parents of the child, the class teacher, the SENCO and the Head Teacher.
3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

The class teacher has responsibility for the overall well-being of every child in their class. Emotional well-being is supported by making sure that children who find transitional times difficult are well prepared for any changes. When children are about to change class they are helped to make their own transition book, which they can revisit during the summer holidays. A professional counselling service is available in school for identified children, which provides children with emotional support and aims to enrich their well-being.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

Our school Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) is Mrs Marcella Olliffe. She can be contacted at school: Morven Park Primary School School Street Kirkby-in-Ashfield Nottingham Nottinghamshire NG17 7BT Tel: 01623 459395 office@morvenpark.notts.sch.uk

Marcella Olliffe (SENCo) and Alisa Murphey (Family Liason) and the Head Teacher make referrals to agencies using the appropriate application processes. All referrals to agencies are made with the agreement and consent of parents, with the exception of Social Care referrals where the safety of a pupil may be compromised.

Morven Park is fully equipped to support pupils a range of Special Educational Needs and disabilities. This includes pupils with physical, visual and hearing difficulties. We also have equipment to support children with sensory difficulties. Where pupils require equipment or facilities that the school does not yet have, we follow the appropriate guidance in order to ensure that children have access to all of the equipment and facilities that they need to support their learning. This involves liaising with specialist agencies such as PDSS, teachers of the deaf, and teachers of the visually impaired.

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

The voice of parents is highly valued at Morven Park. Parents are consulted about their child’s education at least termly, and also informally consulted via our Smile support group.

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

Children are at the heart of our school. Children with special educational needs are encouraged to be fully involved in target setting at each termly review meeting.

9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

At Morven Park Primary School, we take complaints very seriously. We encourage pupils and their parents / carers to talk to us as soon as they have a concern, and this usually helps to alleviate any concerns that parents / carers have. However, in the rare case that a concern continues and becomes a complaint, the SEND complaints procedure is as follows: Discuss concern / complaint with class teacher Discuss concern / complaint with SENCo Discuss concern / complaint with Head Teacher Discuss concern / complaint with school governors Refer to Nottinghamshire LEA complaints procedure (located on our school website)

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

Children with special educational needs have a holistic support plan in place which signposts parents to any additional services or organisations that may be able to help their child.

12. How will the school/setting prepare my child/young person to: i) Join the school/setting?

Getting Ready for School groups run prior to children starting Foundation Stage. Children with special educational needs that are transferring to our school from another school may be offered an induction programme if appropriate.

ii) Transfer between phases of education (e.g. early years to primary, primary to secondary etc)?

Children with SEND that are entering Foundation Stage or are new to Morven Park Primary School are offered a detailed program of transition. This involves regular visits to their new setting and a strong line of communication between parents of the pupil and school. Transition booklets detailing school staff, facilities and environment are tailor-made for pupils with SEND. As children with SEND progress through Morven Park Primary School and enter new classes, individualised support packages are put in place. Class teachers, SENCo and the school Learning Mentor work closely with pupils and their parents to ensure a fluid transition with minimal disruption to a pupil’s wellbeing. Visits to new classes, meeting new teachers / teaching assistants, and photo stories of pupils’ next journey are some examples of practices that are in place to support transition between year groups. With the support of SENCOs at secondary schools, we carefully plan transition from Year 6 to Year 7. Pupils with SEND are offered additional transition visits by their chosen secondary school. Mrs Olliffe (SENCo) and / or Year 6 teachers inform the SENCo at Kirkby College of any pupils that may need additional support prior to their transition visits.

iii) Prepare for adulthood and independent living?
