Schools Extended Local Offer Response

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

At Dean Hole C of E we make provision for a variety of needs. These can include issues with cognition and learning, communication and interaction, social and emotional and mental health issues or sensory and physical needs.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

At Dean Hole we identify the needs of pupils with SEN as early as possible. This is most effectively done by gathering information from staff, parents, education, health and care services. If you believe your child has special educational needs speak to the school as soon as possible.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

In order to make consistent continuous progress in relation to SEN provision the school encourages feedback from staff, parents and pupils throughout the year. This is undertaken through staff meetings, parent’s evenings, review meetings and pupil progress dialogues. Pupil progress will be monitored on a termly basis in line with the SEN Code of Practice.

There is an annual formal evaluation of the effectiveness of the school SEN provision and policy. The evaluation is carried out by the SENCo and headteacher/SEN governor and information is gathered from different sources such as child and parent surveys/ teacher and staff surveys/parents evenings/ consultation evening/ feedback forms. This will be collated and published by the governing body on an annual basis in accordance with section 69 of the Children and Families Act 2014.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

Once a pupil has been identified as having SEN they will be closely monitored by staff in order to gauge their level of learning and possible difficulties.

Parents will be informed fully of every stage of their child’s development and the circumstances under which they are being monitored. They are encouraged to share information and knowledge with the school.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

We want all pupils to have access to a broad and balanced curriculum and for all pupils regardless of their needs to take as full a part in school life as possible. The class teacher remains responsible for working with the child on a day-to-day basis. They will retain responsibility even where the interventions may involve group or one-to-one teaching away from the main class /subject teacher. They will work closely with teaching assistants and /or relevant specialist staff to plan and assess the impact of support and interventions and links with classroom teaching. Support with further assessment of the pupil’s strengths and weaknesses, problem solving and advising of the implementation of effective support will be provided by the SENCO.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

All those working with the pupil, including support staff will be informed of their individual needs, the support that is being provided, any particular teaching strategies/approaches that are being employed and the outcomes that are being sought.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

All pupils with SEND will have access to Elements 1 and 2 of a school’s budget as appropriate. Some pupils with SEND may access additional funding. This additional funding might be from a budget which is devolved to and moderated by the Family of Schools. (The Family of Schools comprises of a secondary school and its feeder primary schools). For those with the most complex needs, additional funding is retained by the local authority. This is accessed through the Family of Schools. The Family SENCO (Michelle Oldfield) will refer individual applications to a multi-agency panel, which is administered by the Local Authority, who will determine whether the level and complexity of need meets the threshold for this funding.

Where appropriate, additional funding may be allocated from Pupil Premium money, based on individual pupils and their needs.

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

At Dean Hole C of E Primary we make every effort to include all pupils in residential and non-residential trips. This may involve adjusting the itinerary and providing one to one adult provision when necessary. These and other considerations will be highlighted on the risk assessments.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

We recognise that some children have extra emotional and social needs that need to be developed and nurtured. We support pupils through small group work addressing these issues and seek outside help for pupils with specific needs. Pupils have opportunities to talk individually with staff if they need to.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

The person responsible for overseeing the provision for children with SEN is Headteacher, Mr John Dodd 01636 636219

The person co-ordinating the day to day provision of education for pupils with SEN is SENCO, Mrs Ann Clark 01636 636219

5.a) What training have staff supporting special educational needs had and what is planned?

We aim to keep all school staff up to date with relevant training and developments in teaching practice in relation to the needs of pupils with SEN.

We recognise the need to train all our staff on SEN issues and we have funding available to support this professional development. The SENCO, with the senior leadership team, ensures that training opportunities are matched to school development priorities and those identified through the use of provision management.

5.b) What specialist services and expertise are available or accessed by the setting/school?

The SENCO attends relevant SEN courses, Family SEN meetings and facilitates/signposts relevant SEN focused external training opportunities for all staff.

6. How will equipment and facilities to support pupils with special educational needs secured? How accessible is the school/setting?

Dean Hole C of E Primary complies with all relevant accessibility for pupils with SEN. In addition there is a loop system for hearing impairment and a shower room.

The school is easily accessible.

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

Dean Hole C of E Primary believes that a close working relationship with parents is vital in order to ensure
early and accurate identification and assessment of SEN leading to the correct intervention and provision
continuing social and academic progress of children with SEN
personal and academic targets are set and met effectively
Parents are kept up to date with their child’s progress through Parent’s evenings, reviews informal discussions and annual reports

In cases where more frequent regular contact with parents is necessary, this will be arranged based on the individual pupil’s needs. The SENCO may also signpost parents of pupils with SEN to the local authority Parent Partnership service where specific advice, guidance and support may be required.

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

We value and celebrate each child being able to express their views on all aspects of school life and where appropriate involved in developing IEP’s. This is usually carried out through circle time activities, school council, individual concern books, worry box and regularly working in family groups throughout the school.

9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

If a parent or carer has any concerns or complaints regarding the care or welfare of their child, an appointment can be made by them to speak to the SENCO, who will be able to advise on formal procedures for complaint.

Please see the Complaints Procedure Policy accessible on the website.

10. How does the governing body involve other organisations and services (e.g. health, social care, local authority support services and voluntary organisations) in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and supporting the families of such pupils?

The school continues to build strong working relationships and links with external support services in order to fully support our SEN pupils and aid school inclusion.

Sharing knowledge and information with our support services is key to the effective and successful SEN provision within our school. Any one of the support services may raise concerns about a pupil. This will then be brought to the attention of the SENCO who will then inform the child’s parents.

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

There are a variety of different organisations that can help support you and your child.

We have induction sessions, information packs are sent and we liaise closely with parents.

ii) Transfer between phases of education (e.g. early years to primary, primary to secondary etc)?

As a small school staff are in constant communication with each other and pupils are well known by all staff and vice versa.

iii) Prepare for adulthood and independent living?

We encourage all pupils from an early age to be as independent as possible and ensure they are prepared for their next phase of education, which in turn will prepare them for adulthood.

Pupils engage in PSHE lessons which explore issues which affect their lives and relationships.
