1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

At Maun Infants and Nursery School we make provision in accordance with the Code of Practice 2014, the SEN and disability Act (amended 2001), Index for Inclusion (updated 2001) the Equality Act (2010) and the Children and Families Act 2014. We ensure specific learning needs are met through a differentiated, inclusive curriculum as well as providing differentiated resources. We seek advice where needed from outside agencies to make sure we are providing the best provision for every child.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) can be identified in terms of four categories:

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Sensory, Physical and/or Medical
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health

The identification of SEND is built into the overall approach of everything we do at Maun, the way we assess children, monitor their progress and the way we track their development. Our aim is to identify children who require extra support as early in their school career as possible. This then ensures the correct support; provision and differentiation can be put into place from the start. Provision is adapted and implemented as necessary. Once a child has been identified as needing possible support the parents/careers will be invited into school to meet with the SENCo and class teacher. During this meeting the needs of the child will be discussed as well as strategies and provision that should be put into place. Targets will also be set in order to support the child’s progress. These targets will be reviewed on a termly basis. At Maun we strive to ensure that children and their parents are involved in making decisions. This is something we believe strongly in and are committed to working in partnership with the child, parents/careers as well as outside agencies to identify needs early, provide appropriate support and monitor the progress and development of all children. Information is transferred between teachers during transition time to enable correct and appropriate provision continues throughout school. If as a parent, you are concerned, please speak to your child's class teacher or the School SENCo.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

Each child who attends Maun is assessed rigorously each half term as well as being assessed on a daily basis. Throughout the assessment process we encourage feedback form all adults involved with the child as well as the child themselves. Pupil progress and attainment is closely monitored. Each half term the SENCo along with the Head Teacher and Class Teachers discuss the progress of the children. Through these meetings it is identified interventions that have been successful and interventions that have not. During the discussion it is decided what interventions best suit the child, ensuring that they are receiving the best possible provision for their needs. At Independent Learning Plan meetings, parents are able to share their views on their child’s progress and provision.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

Parents are invited to discuss their child’s progress and development as well as any worries or concerns at termly parent consultations. These meetings are usually around 30 minutes long and will be used to review provision and targets that are in place. As well as this we will plan for the next steps and set new targets if appropriate, this will help parents understand where their child is going next ann what they can do at home to support that learning.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

At Maun Infant and Nursery school we aim to provide an inclusive setting that children of all abilities can access. Children with SEND will access the curriculum through, differentiated, adapted provision that is specific for them. The school makes every effort to offer all opportunities to all children sometimes with support from outside agencies. Where it is apparent that a mainstream classroom environment is not appropriate for a child, the SENCo and Head Teacher will meet with the parents/careers in order to discuss further arrangements. At Maun we deliver learning through a creative curriculum, enabling children to make links with their learning. Each lesson id differentiated according to the needs of all children, resources and the environment may need adapting as well as support needing to be put into place to allow children to access the lesson.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

Every child has access to a broad and balanced curriculum that each teach ensures is differentiated to suit each child’s needs.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

This decision depends on the need of the child. Staff are deployed to where the need is. Additional funding maybe available for specific 1:1 support following a rigorous bidding process.

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

Maun infant and Nursery is an inclusive schools and therefore our aim is for all children to access all areas of learning. Extra support and/or resources will be provided where necessary to enable children with SEND to access learning outside the classroom. Discussions between the staff team will take place well in advance of the visit; risk assessments are always completed and agrees before an offsite visit, the health and safety of all children is of great importance.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?
