1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

South Nottinghamshire Academy is a mainstream 11-19 school and part of the Redhill Academy Trust.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

Progress data is monitored carefully by classroom teachers and Leaders. Teachers, parents/carers, as well as students can raise concerns at any time to the SENCO, Teaching Assistants or the Subject Leader. Parents should contact the Academy directly to ask to speak to the SENCO.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

At the end of each academic year, the effectiveness of SEN provision is evaluated by looking at progress made. The classroom teachers monitor termly, how effective the interventions and provision are. This is done by continual assessment and teachers adjust accordingly. This process is overseen by the subject leaders and the SENCO. SEN information is annually reviewed and this was completed in Autumn 2016. As part of the SEN reviews process, Parents and Carers and students are able to share their views regarding provision.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

We monitor children with Special Educational Needs through a variety of ways including teacher assessments and observations made by Teachers, Teaching Assistants, outside agencies and parents. Liasion with parents and carers is important to the review process and appropriate interventions will be discussed.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

At South Nottinghamshire Academy,which is part of the Redhill Trust,  all teachers are teachers of pupils with Special Educational Needs. In order to support our children with SEN, we find patience, encouragement and well trained staff, using a range of teaching strategies is the most effective approach. We also seek and work with multi-agency support where needed to further enhance support.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

The Academy adapts the learning provision environment depending on the needs of each child. Children with the most complex needs may have an individualised or small group support.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

We identify children with Special Educational Needs through a variety of ways including teacher assessments, observations by teachers, Teaching Assistants, outside agencies and parental knowledge, as well as student views. Decisions about provision are made alongside these discussions alongside progress evidence collected from progress assessments. The Family of Schools are involved in Additional Funding decisions as part of a moderation process.

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

Risk assessments and individual plans are put in place in order for all children to access activities. The Learning Intervention Centre and Teaching Assistants support SEN and vulnerable students during break and lunchtimes as well as providing a weekly homework club.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

South Nottinghamshire Academy have the Learning Intervention Centre, Curriculum Support Unit and an Inclusion Team to support students with particular needs or those who require additional support.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

The SEN coordinators at South Nottinghamshire Academy are Mrs Claire Lucas and the Lead Teaching Assistant: Ms Siobhan Wilson.

5.a) What training have staff supporting special educational needs had and what is planned?

The SENCO has the Level 4 National Award for SEN Co-ordination. THE SEN teaching assistants undertake regular training. The teaching staff also access SSFS CPD. The SENCO and HR keeps an up to date list of all SEN training that teachers and teaching assistants have attended. If more specialist support is required, with consent, the SENCO will contact outside agencies such as SFSS (Schools and Families Specialist services) and Educational Psychologists.

5.b) What specialist services and expertise are available or accessed by the setting/school?

SEN equipment and facilities are updated and added to yearly, depending on the specific needs of the children. Recommendations will be sought from organisations with specialist expertise where necessary such as physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

6. How will equipment and facilities to support pupils with special educational needs secured? How accessible is the school/setting?

We have an Academy Access plan and we are DDA compliant.

SEN equipment and facilities are updated and added to yearly, depending on the specific needs of the children. Recommendations will be sought from organisations with specialist expertise where necessary such as PDSS, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

Parents of children with Special Educational Needs are consulted and involved in the education of their child in a number of ways including; parents evenings, SEN meetings and Annual Reviews. In addition to this, parents are welcome to contact the SENCO, teachers or Teaching assistants in person, by phone or by e mail if they require any assistance.

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

Children with special educational needs are consulted with and involved in their education in several ways: during an Annual Review, Parent evenings and Parent/Student SEN review meetings. The children and parents are also involved in these reviews.

9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

If parents of pupils with Special Educational Needs have any concerns or complaints regarding the provision made at South Nottinghamshire Academy for their child, please contact either the SENCO Mrs Claire Lucas, Ms Siobhan Wilson or the SEN Governor, Mrs Naomi Smith.

10. How does the governing body involve other organisations and services (e.g. health, social care, local authority support services and voluntary organisations) in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and supporting the families of such pupils?

The Governing Body works alongside the SENCO and the teaching staff at South Nottinghamshire Academy.  We work  with a range of specialist organisations in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, SFSS, educational psychologists, community paediatricians, dyslexia support teachers and CAMHS. The SENCO, Heads of Years, Teaching Assistants and the Inclusion Support Manager are the main contacts for supporting families of pupils with Special Educational needs.

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

The contact details of support services for parents of pupils with special educational needs can be obtained from the Mrs Lucas,  SENCO or Ms Wilson, Lead Teaching Assistant.

12. How will the school/setting prepare my child/young person to: i) Join the school/setting?

After an appointment is made, Students and parents can come and visit the Academy to be shown round.

ii) Transfer between phases of education (e.g. early years to primary, primary to secondary etc)?

The Academy holds transition days prior to the Summer term.

iii) Prepare for adulthood and independent living?

Students are supported to find Post 16 provision.
