Outwood Academy Valley is an Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ Academy for 11-16 year olds, with sixth form provision available on a separate site. We take students from a range of different primary schools and offer a full and bespoke transition package for students with additional needs. We are a high performing academy in which 60% of students this year attained grade 5+ in Maths and English including students who have Special Educational Needs.

Description

We are a fully inclusive academy, all our teachers are teachers of students with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and our curriculum is varied and broad and is differentiated to meet the needs and abilities of all our students.

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

Our academy caters for all types of SEND across all areas of need

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

Through lesson observations, staff feedback and careful monitoring of progress

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

Through careful monitoring of progress, lesson observations, support from key agencies where necessary

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

All students receive praising stars assessment data every half term to inform progress. For our students with SEND they will also have a termly review with parents where additional feedback from teaching staff is gathered to ensure that progress in being made and that the support in place is working

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

We meet the needs of students through a very high standard of quality first teaching and we intervene with small scale time measured interventions where need arises

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

We offer a wide and varied curriculum to meet the needs of all learners

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

This is based on need and funding available to offer TA support or additional intervention support within the mainstream classroom

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

All student have access to opportunities outside the classroom and are supported to attend trips etc through removing whatever barriers need to be removed

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

We offer support through referrals to CAMHS and talkzone as well as other outside agencies

5.a) What training have staff supporting special educational needs had and what is planned?

All staff have regular access to training and development in relation to all areas of special needs 

5.b) What specialist services and expertise are available or accessed by the setting/school?

The academy calls on support from the educational psychologist, CAMHS, talkzone therapy, specialist communication and interaction teams, specialist cognition and learning teams as well as early help and social care support

6. How will equipment and facilities to support pupils with special educational needs secured? How accessible is the school/setting?

The academy is accessible through the use of lifts and wide access entry

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

All students with SEND have termly review meetings. We make regular additional contact with parents to discuss progress, concerns, and any potential SEND as and when necessary

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

All reviews are pupil centred and we encourage students to attend and contribute to these

9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

A complaint can be raised with the SENDCO and escalated to the principal if necessary

10. How does the governing body involve other organisations and services (e.g. health, social care, local authority support services and voluntary organisations) in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and supporting the families of such pupils?

We regularly meet with relevant organisations to review how pupils under their provision are progressing. Families are invited and included in these discussions 

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

We discuss additional support available to parents at regular review meetings

12. How will the school/setting prepare my child/young person to: i) Join the school/setting?

We have a bespoke transition package for students who need this when joining the academy

ii) Transfer between phases of education (e.g. early years to primary, primary to secondary etc)?

A range of transition support and visits are available as needed

iii) Prepare for adulthood and independent living?

Transition and supported visits to post 16 settings and support for skills for working life for students who need this
