National Deaf Children's Society

National Deaf Children's Society

The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people.

90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents with little or no experience of deafness or knowledge of how to communicate with a deaf person. 40% of deaf children have additional needs.

Many deaf children struggle to communicate with their immediate family, and develop language at a slower rate than their hearing peers. Given the right support there is no reason for any deaf child to develop language at a slower rate than a hearing child with similar abilities.

Deafness is not a learning disability. There is no reason why the majority of deaf children should achieve any less than hearing children. Deaf children are at far higher risk of developing mental illness than their hearing peers.

The Buzz is NDCS’s exciting new website especially for deaf children and young people. There are two sites – one for children (8 to 11 years old) and one for teenagers (12 to 18 years old). Deaf children and young people can access information, share their experiences and have fun at www.buzz.org.uk.

Why did we create this website?

With your help, NDCS asked nearly 1,500 deaf children and young people about the type of services they’d like from us. 90% of respondents said that they would like a dedicated website just for them.

The Buzz, the coolest thing to zoom into town...

What is on the Buzz?

The Buzz gives deaf children and young people the opportunity to make new friends, play games, check out what's happening in their area and to chat about the things that matter to them.

The Buzz is a safe and positive online space. The site is closely monitored and we have a clear safety policy to help deaf children and young people keep safe while using the website.
