Schools Extended Local Offer Response

1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

At Kingsway, we make sure we provide the best opportunities for all our pupils to participate in every aspect of school life. Some of our children may have barriers to learning that can include issues with cognition and learning, communication and interaction, social, emotional and mental health issues, or sensory and physical needs.  All children have support within lessons through differentiation and quality first teaching strategies.  This means activities are planned at a level to suit the learning abilities of each child.  This can involve a range of adaptations, including changes to the physical environment, teaching styles as well as different levels of adult support.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

If your child is identified as not making the expected progress, we will meet with you to discuss our concerns in more detail, and to listen to any concerns you may have.  These informal chats may lead to a more formal process where we will plan any additional support for your child and perhaps the need for referrals to outside professionals who may also be able to offer help and support for your child.

If you have any concerns about your child or believe your child has additional needs, it is important to discuss this with your child’s class teacher and/or the School SENCO, Mr Liam Dudley.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

Sometimes the class teacher will want to take your concerns to the school’s SENCo.  This is currently Mr Liam Dudley.

The SENCo is responsible for making sure that your child’s special educational needs are met, and that you are involved in supporting your child’s learning and in monitoring and reviewing their progress.  Contact with the SENCo can be made through the school office or through your class teacher.

6. How will equipment and facilities to support pupils with special educational needs secured? How accessible is the school/setting?

We currently have a trained SALT (Speech and Language Therapist), who works in school 1 and a half days a week, they support a Speech and Language TA who will support children requiring extra support with their speech and language.

We have a trained ELSA TA in school, who support children with their emotional wellbeing.

We have THINK Children visit school weekly, who provide EWF (Emotional wellbeing facilitators) who support children at the first sign of emerging emotional, social or behaviour issues.

We have a Play Therapist also provided by THINK children who work with children who require more focused support for situations/problems they may have experienced.

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

At Kingsway, we have a continuous rolling provision of staff CPD which is accessed by any staff who feel they require training to deliver a specialist intervention or extra information about areas of Special Educational Needs.

In the past 12 months, staff have received:

  • Introception training
  • Making sense of Autism
  • Communication Partner training
  • Makaton training
  • Speech sound training
  • Dyscalculia training
  • Selective Mutism Training
  • ELSA accreditation
8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

We believe that it is very important for children to be involved in their education and achieve this through:

  • Pupil interviews
  • Structured Conversation
  • Child Friendly targets
  • Discussion with their class teacher/teaching assistant.
  • Participation in review meetings if appropriate.
9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

Kingsway Primary school is accessible for wheelchair users with no ramps or steps needed to enter the building. A lift is used to access the second floor of the building. The school has disabled toilet facilities situated next to the office.

Parents/carers, whose first language is not English, are supported by translated letters provided to them and our parent communication platform (dojo) has a translation feature for parents to translate any posts on the app.

10. How does the governing body involve other organisations and services (e.g. health, social care, local authority support services and voluntary organisations) in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and supporting the families of such pupils?

A robust and comprehensive transition package bespoke for each child is carefully planned to ensure that transitions into Kingsway, across Key Stages, a move to a new school (where time allows) and transitions to secondary schools are as stress-free and run smoothly for parents and pupils.

The SENCo works closely with secondary schools to pass information over, facilitate extra transition days, meet with the SENCo and SEND team, and for the pupil to meet these people from their new school.

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

We are always ready to support and are able to signpost you to different organisations or support networks. In addition, the LA Local Offer Website provides links to all of these organisations across the authority.

13. Where can I access further information?

To access more information about Kingsway Primary School please contact the school or speak to the Headteacher or SENCO. We are always ready to listen.

Please also refer to the wide range of support and information on the LA Offer Website.
