Base 51 - Counselling Service

Base 51 Counselling Service provides time and space for young people aged 12 to 25 to talk about their troubles and explore difficult feelings in an environment which is dependable, free from intrusion and confidential.  Counsellors at Base 51 respect young people’s viewpoint while helping them to deal with specific problems, cope with crises, improve their relationships, or develop better ways of living.

Counselling offers the young person help to gain insight into their feelings, thoughts and behaviour and to work with them to create the necessary or wanted changes which help alleviate their distress. Young people come to counselling for many issues including relationships, family issues, bullying, neglect, violence, abuse, anger, trauma, being self-critical, adoption, loss, foster-care, bereavement, sexuality, exploitation, drugs and alcohol, disordered eating, anxiety, panic, stress, depression, suicidal thoughts or self-harm to name a few!

Base 51 Counselling is located inside the NGY myplace building.

Time / Date Details

When is it on
Open Monday to Saturday with counselling sessions available between 9.30am -and 7.00pm. Crisis drop-in sessions available Monday to Saturday at various times, call us on 0115 9525040 for more details and to book, we will try to book you an appointment the day you call.

Session Information
Counselling session take place on a 1-2-1 basis and sessions last 50 minutes. The first time you come to see us we will complete an assessment with you to give you chance to ask any questions and support you to decide if this is the right service for you. If between us we decide it is you will be added to the waiting list to be allocated a counsellor. Once you have been allocated a counsellor we will contact you to set up a regular time on a weekly basis. You will have a review with your counsellor every six weeks to see how the sessions are going and whta you might want to do next.
During Covid 19, we are offering counselling by telephone, video call and Discord. As of August 3rd we will begin to re-introduce our face-to-face offer. Please call us for further information.

Referral Details

Young people can refer themselves for counselling by calling 0115 9525040 and asking for a ‘crisis drop-in’ appointment or completing a referral form and returning to us, we will them contact with a date and time to come and see us. Alternatively parents/cares and professionals can book a young person in for drop in or complete referral and return it to us.
