Incest & Sexual Abuse Survivors (ISAS)

ISAS was established in 1991 by Newark and Sherwood Volunteer Services, Health, Women's Aid and other organisations began to realise the rising need for the provision of specialist counselling for female survivors. It was soon recognised that there were male survivors also in need of such provision.

During the 20 years we have been providing services we have worked with clients in prisons who have experienced Childhood Sexual Abuse and Rape. We have also worked with clients who have gone on to sexually abuse and had been remanded in HMP Whatton, in order to help prevent them from offending further.

We have an established provision for males and females aged 16 plus who have experienced rape or sexual assault.

Therapeutic group work is offered as an addition to our one to one service provision and sometimes clients benefit from using both services to aid their recovery.

We provide telephone, text and email services in order to provide support for survivors, carers, family members and other agencies

The experienced gained in providing such a specialist service has enabled ISAS to provide extensive and specialised training for our Volunteer Counsellors and other organisations which has been accredited by The National Counselling Society. The training and provision of placements for student counsellors has been endorsed and recommended by many of our local Colleges and Universities as excellent.

ISAS is an organisational member of the BACP (British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapy), The Survivors Trust and The National Counselling Society. All of our volunteer counsellors are either in their final year of their diploma or qualified.

A strict selection procedure ensures that our counsellors are suitable to work with our client group and the in depth training ensures that we equip every member of our team with the skills and awareness to be able to work with our clients.

    • The Male Therapeutic group is for any male survivor over the age of 16. This group can be accessed before one to one counselling as well as post counselling. • Dramatherapy:
    • Dramatherapy is a psychological therapy that can help to facilitate creativity, confidence, imagination, insight, learning and growth. With giving equal validity to the body and mind it can allow you to discover deeper understandings. The therapeutic process focuses on the intentional use of the healing aspects within drama. This has value in enabling self-expression through the use of artistic interventions, such as stories, masks, play and improvisation.  Dramatherapy offers an indirect and safe approach for the exploration of feelings; which at ISAS, follows a client led approach allowing you to work at your own pace. A creative exploration within the context of a Dramatherapy group allows for different perspectives and support. You do not ‘act’ things out, nor do you need to have any prior acting background. Please contact us for further information and accessibility details.
