1. What kinds of special educational needs does the school/setting make provision for?

Awsworth Primary & Nursery School is an inclusive school. We aim to provide the best learning opportunities for our children and ensure that all pupils are valued members of the school. We aim to make provisions for all areas of special educational needs to the best of our ability and endeavour to provide personalised provision for each individual.

2. (For mainstream schools & maintained nurseries only) How does the school/setting know if pupils need extra help and what should I do if I think that my child may have special educational needs?

At Awsworth Primary & Nursery School we acknowledge that all children are individuals and have different learning needs, some requiring additional support to help meet their needs or improve their learning. We aim to identify the needs of pupils with SEND as early as possible. We actively gather information from parents, education, healthcare services and early years settings where applicable.

Where SEND is identified prior to a child starting school we will work very closely with all the parties involved to ensure that the needs of the child are understood and a clear transition plan is in place.

When identifying children with SEND within our school we follow the clear guidelines set out in the SEND Code of Practice 2015. Throughout Awsworth Primary & Nursery School we continually monitor and assess the progress of all our children, where expected progress is not being made, interventions are put in place to work on the identified difficulties.

Our SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator) co-ordinates the SEND provision throughout school and nursery liaising where necessary with parents, pupils, school staff and specialist advisers from the Local Authority and Health Service.

When a parent/carer is concerned that their child may have a SEND this should be discussed initially with their child’s class teacher at a pre-arranged meeting, the SENCO will be informed and become involved as needed.

3.a) How does the school/setting evaluate the effectiveness of its provision for pupils with special educational needs?

Our SENCO, supported by the senior leadership team and SEND Governor, regularly reviews the SEND support that is in place and monitors the progress of children within our school.  Through monitoring, observing and assessing a child’s needs, the SENCO works together with the staff to put in place appropriate support and provision to meet identified difficulties.  All children within our school have personalised targets.  Some pupils with complex special educational needs will have additional SEND targets that are recorded on an individual education plan (IEP).  These are reviewed termly at IEP review meetings which are attended by the child, if appropriate, the parents/carers, the class teacher, the SENCO and representatives from outside agencies that work with the child.

3.b) How will both the school/setting and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will the school/setting help me to support their learning?

The school closely monitors the progress of all pupils.  Pupils with SEND are monitored through scrutiny of performance data, evaluation of intervention group data, evaluation of behaviour logs and through dialogue with pupils, parents and other involved adults.  Ways in which parents are able to support their child will be communicated informally by the class teacher, through parents’ evenings and via IEP reviews where appropriate.

3.c) What is the school's approach to teaching pupils with special educational needs?

At Awsworth Primary & Nursery School we believe in the importance of good quality classroom teaching.  Teachers work hard to ensure work is planned and delivered offering the right amount of support and challenge for all pupils whilst addressing children’s preferred learning style.  Some targeted SEND support may be given to pupils in the form of carefully planned small group and 1-1 interventions that take place outside the classroom.   Pupils with complex special educational needs may receive 1:1 support within the classroom.

3.d) How will the curriculum and learning be matched to my child/young person's needs?

Awsworth Primary & Nursery School’s curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure that it promotes the inclusion of all pupils.  Class teachers provide a creative, stimulating and exciting curriculum, offering differentiated learning opportunities matched to pupils’ preferred learning styles and promote academic progress.  Some pupils with SEND may require specific curriculum adaptations.  We endeavour to make reasonable adjustments to meet these needs.

3.e) How are decisions made about the type and amount of support my child/young person will receive?

All pupils with SEND will have access to Element 1 and 2 of a school's budget, which equates to £6,000.  Some pupils with SEND may access additional funding.  This additional funding might be from a budget which is devolved to and moderated by the Family of Schools.  (The Family of Schools comprises of a secondary school and its feeder primary schools).

For those with the most complex needs, additional funding (HLN or high level needs) is retained by the local authority.  This is accessed by the Family of Schools.  The Family SENCO will refer individual applications to a multi-agency panel, which is administered by the Local Authority.  The panel will determine whether the level and complexity of need meets the threshold for this funding.

It is the responsibility of the senior management team, SENCO and governors to agree how the allocation of resources is used.

Some children with special educational needs may need additional support to help meet their needs or progress their learning.  The decision to do this is made following assessment of attainment and progress by the school and sometimes outside professionals.  This additional support is monitored closely and discussed with parents and the child where appropriate.  Some children will need additional support to ensure they have a smooth transition as they move through school into different classes or key stages.  Some children require support for a longer period of time to ensure they can access the full curriculum effectively.  Support will be planned by school staff and by external agencies where appropriate.  Parents/carers will be kept informed about this support and it will be discussed at our termly meetings or more frequently if needed.

3.f) How will my child/young person be included in activities outside the classroom, including school trips?

At Awsworth Primary & Nursery School we provide a wide variety of exciting and enjoyable after school activities, visits and residential experiences.  We greatly value the benefit of education outside the classroom and believe that all pupils should have the opportunity to participate in these and will make reasonable adjustments to ensure that all children are included in activities.  Prior to any trips, a pre-visit is made by staff and a risk assessment is carried out which considers the needs of all children. Where necessary, we liaise with parents/carers and other agencies involved to discuss any additional support or arrangements which may be required.  This may involve providing specialist equipment, providing additional trained adults or adapting activities.

3.g) What support will there be for my child/young person's overall well-being?

At Awsworth Primary & Nursery School the social and emotional well-being of all our pupils is very important.  The emotional needs of a child may be met within school by the setting up of a ‘circle of friends’, involvement in our Nurture group or by the allocation of ‘Talk-Time’ with an appropriate adult.  Where a child has complex emotional needs we direct parents/carers to appropriate health agencies including the school nurse, health visitors and the family’s doctor.

4. (For mainstream schools and maintained nurseries) Who is the school/setting's special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO) and what are their contact details.

Our SENCO is Mrs Angela Standall and she can be contacted through the school office.

5.a) What training have staff supporting special educational needs had and what is planned?

All staff working with children at Awsworth Primary & Nursery School are either fully qualified or undergoing training courses.  Staff have undertaken a wide variety of SEND training, both as whole staff or as individuals.  Some of this training has been delivered by external agencies and some has been delivered in house with staff sharing good practice.  This includes training with regard to safe handling, dyslexia, autism, behaviour management and speech and language.

5.b) What specialist services and expertise are available or accessed by the setting/school?

Our school has very effective working relationships and links with external support services which enable us to fully support our SEND pupils and aid school inclusion.

Specialist services include:

  • The Educational Psychology Service (EP)
  • Therapists including those for Speech and Language (SALT), Occupational (OT) and Physiotherapy (PT)
  • Schools and Families Specialist  Services (SFSS) – includes those for Early Years, Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Sensory Impairments and Physical Disabilities
  • The Personal Social and Emotional Support Team (PSED)
  • Health Services including School Nurse, Paediatricians, Health Visitors and Child and Adult Mental Health services (CAMHS)
  • Social Care and Local Children’s Centres
  • Outreach and Voluntary Services Schools and Families Support Services:
  • Manual Handling and Disability Access support

Sharing knowledge and information with our support services is key to the effective and successful SEND provision within our school.

6. How will equipment and facilities to support pupils with special educational needs secured? How accessible is the school/setting?

Where possible we provide equipment or complete necessary funding applications to provide any equipment that is deemed necessary in order to support children in school.  We aim to ensure that all activities and equipment is accessible to all children, parents/carers and visitors to our school.  Awsworth Primary & Nursery School is a wheelchair accessible building.  We have a disabled toilet, a hygiene suite and an area designated for physiotherapy.  We use symbols and visual timetables where appropriate.  Risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place to ensure the safety of all staff and children.

7. What are the arrangements for consulting parents of pupils with special educational needs? How will be I involved in the education of my child/young person?

At Awsworth Primary & Nursery School we are continually assessing, planning, implementing and reviewing our approach to teaching all children.  If we are concerned about a child in school then the child’s class teacher will discuss these concerns with the parent/carer.  We aim to identify these concerns as early as possible.  For children with complex needs the SENCO will organise termly multi agency meetings to which the parents will be invited and asked to contribute.  These review meetings allow parents the opportunity to meet with the child’s class teacher, review progress and be involved in the target setting process.

8. What are the arrangements for consulting young people with SEN and involving them in their education?

Wherever possible we involve the children in the setting and reviewing of their targets and provision.  Our pupils are fully involved in the setting of targets and copies of these are given to parents/carers.  Where appropriate the child will be invited to attend the whole or part of the review meeting.  We actively encourage all children to participate fully in all aspects of school life.  Our School Council also has representatives of children with SEND to ensure an inclusive contribution to whole school decision making.

9. What do I do if I have a concern or complaint about the SEN provision made by the school/setting?

If parents/carers have any concerns regarding the progress of their child or the provision in place they are encouraged to talk to the child’s class teacher.  The class teacher will then discuss this with the SENCO.  If the SENCO cannot resolve the issue directly a meeting will be arranged, with all concerned, to fully share and discuss these concerns, resulting in actions being agreed.  If parents feel their concern is not resolved through this process, they should refer to our Complaints Procedure.

10. How does the governing body involve other organisations and services (e.g. health, social care, local authority support services and voluntary organisations) in meeting the needs of pupils with special educational needs and supporting the families of such pupils?

With the support of the governors, Awsworth Primary & Nursery School invites and seeks advice and support from external agencies in the identification and assessment of, and provision for, SEND.  The SENCO is the designated person responsible for liaising with the following:

  • Education Psychology Service
  • Schools and Family Specialist Service
  • Social Services
  • Speech and Language Service
  • Specialist Outreach Services

The SENCO has a duty to report to the governors on a regular basis.

11. How does the school/setting seek to signpost organisations, services etc who can provide additional support to parents/carers/young people?

We work closely with a wide range of organisations and services and are able to refer children to relevant agencies that provide additional support.  Further information is available through Nottinghamshire SEND Local Offer.

The Nottinghamshire County council Local Offer is a comprehensive directory of local services, opportunities and access for children and young people with SEND and disabilities.  This can be accessed at www.nottinghamshire.sendlocaloffer.org.uk.

Parents/carers can gain advice and support from Parent Partnership www.ppsnotts.org.uk or contact the Independent Parental Special Advice team www.ipsea.org.uk.

12. How will the school/setting prepare my child/young person to: i) Join the school/setting?

Transfer to a new school or setting can be an anxious time for both child and parent and we encourage visits to our school before applying.  Careful planning is made for all children but for children with SEND or a disability an additional transition plan may be put in place. This will generally include early discussions with the parent/carers, the setting they are coming from and any existing agencies which are providing existing support.  A transition book or social story maybe written for the child to use at home, this may include photographs of the building, adults working with the child and key times of the school day.

ii) Transfer between phases of education (e.g. early years to primary, primary to secondary etc)?

We carefully plan for all children moving to new classes within school. Currently this involves an initial class swap day and close liaison between the child’s existing teacher and the new teacher.  In addition to this, pupils with SEND may also have additional visits and time with their new teacher or in their new classroom; they may have a transition book or social story.  Our family of schools (Kimberley Family) currently run transition programmes for small groups of pupils leaving year 6 involving additional visits where the children may experience break and lunch time. When pupils transfer to other Secondary schools bespoke transition plans can also be created if necessary.

iii) Prepare for adulthood and independent living?

In school we aim to prepare all children for adulthood and develop independence to take a full and active part in society.
