Adult Deaf and Visual Impairment Service (ADVIS)

The Adult Deaf and Visual Impairment Service (ADVIS) provides specialist support to people aged 18 or over who are:

  •  Deaf/deafened/hearing impaired
  •  Blind/visually impaired
  •  Dual sensory impaired

ADVIS has specialist workers who understand the difficulties caused by a sensory impairment and can use sign language.

Nottinghamshire County Council have a service level agreement with Notts Deaf Society to provide a Sign Language interpreter as required.

You do not have to be registered blind / visually impaired to access our Rehabilitation services which support people to maintain independence.

The specialist rehabilitation officers can support with:

  • Information and advice about your situation and support in the community
  • Help with everyday living skills
  • Specialist equipment to make everyday living easier
  • Developing mobility skills e.g. travelling independently
  • Access to other services e.g. guide dogs, talking books, Notts Fire and Rescue Service
  • Advice and support to access environmental equipment to enable people who are Deaf or hard of hearing to live safely and independently at home.

If you need care and support, our specialist Social Workers can provide you with an assessment of your needs.

ADVIS Promoting Independence Workers (PIW) work with Deaf and deafblind people face-to-face in their own home or in the community on a 1:1 basis.  Goals are identified with the person and the PIW will work with them to achieve those goals.
