Notts Help Yourself Website Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the website www.nottshelpyourself.org.uk  run by Nottinghamshire County Council, using content added by local providers of services.

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Nottinghamshire County Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the following listed below:

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Some PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards, for example, they may not be structured so they are accessible to a screen reader. We are working to ensure that all future documents are compliant. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they are not essential to providing our services.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Nottinghamshire County Council use a number of third party systems to provide online forms, some of which are difficult to navigate using a screen reader and voice commands. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text content, 1.3.1 Info and Relationships, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels and 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions.
  • The heading structure is not correct on a number of content pages. This fails WCAG 2.4.6 Headings and Labels. We are working to correct this, and to ensure any new content uses correct heading structures.
  • Some images on some pages contain missing or incorrect alternative text. Some of these images are also links. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content and 1.4.5 Images of Text. We are working to add text alternatives to all our images, and for new content to ensure use of images meets accessibility standards.
  • There are some links on the website that may not be accessible to screen readers; they do not contain accurate or descriptive labels. This fails WCAG 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context). We are working to correct this, and to ensure any new content uses descriptive link text.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

We plan to fix PDFs that have been published since September 2018, or that are essential to us providing a service. If not made accessible, they will be replaced with accessible HTML pages.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.

We aim to ensure any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are continuing to go through all the content to ensure it is written in plain English. We aim to have alt text for all images.
